Association of European Border Regions
POLICY PARTNER - GRONAU, GERMANY
As one of the oldest regional associations in Europe, with a hundred member regions in thirty European countries, the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) works in the interest of EU border regions and national authorities to develop capacities, increase awareness, organize events and implement projects.
In its work with Borders in Globalization, AEBR examines specific changes brought by EU and national regulations to EU internal and external borders, paying special attention to the regulatory impact of these changes on the territories of its current and potential members, above and beyond existing instruments for cross border cooperation such as INTERREG and the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation.
Border Policy Research Institute
POLICY PARTNER - SEATTLE, WA
The Border Policy Research Institute (BPRI) at Western Washington University is a multidisciplinary institute that undertakes research to inform policymakers on matters related to the Canada–United States border, particularly in the Cascadia region.
In collaboration with Borders in Globalization, BPRI is researching the BC–WA cross-border region. Its main project, Transboundary Flood Emergency Management Networks in the Salish Sea, seeks to understand how emergencies, crises, and disasters are managed in the Salish Sea transboundary environment at the prevention, response, and recovery stages, using the Nooksack River flood events as a focus.
Canada Border Services Agency
POLICY PARTNER - OTTAWA, ON
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) facilitates the flow of legitimate travellers and trade. The agency also enforces more than 100 acts and regulations that keep our country and Canadians safe. In its work with Borders in Globalization, CBSA provides regional staff support to lead sessions of the annual Summer Institutes.
Central European Service for Cross-Border Initiatives
POLICY PARTNER - BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
The Central European Service for Cross-Border Initiatives (CESCI) is an association based in Hungary which aims to decrease the separating effects of borders in Central Europe. To this end, it conducts research, elaborates strategic plans, prepares and implements projects, supports cross-border cooperation practitioners, and takes part in policymaking on the national and EU levels.
CESCI collaborates with Borders in Globalization to host international conferences and produce research.
International Research Center for Japanese Studies
ACADEMIC PARTNER - KYOTO, JAPAN
The International Research Center for Japanese Studies, or Nichibunken (日文研), is an inter-university research institute in Kyoto devoted to research related to Japanese culture. Along with the National Institute of Japanese Literature, the National Museum of Japanese History, and the National Museum of Ethnology, it is one of the National Institutes for the Humanities.
In collaboration with Borders in Globalization, IRCJS hosts Early Career Researcher Writing Workshops that provide young researchers with a forum to develop their research on Japan’s borders.
Mission Opérationnelle Transfrontalière
POLICY PARTNER - PARIS, FRANCE
The Mission Opérationnelle Transfrontalière (MOT) is an association specialised in supporting cross-border cooperation. Its network brings together 90+ cross-border cooperation actors to defend the interests of cross-border territories, to establish networks between them and to provide them with operational and legal assistance.
The MOT works with Borders in Globalization on specific regulatory and policy issues relating to European cross-border regions, and aims to contribute to the development of comparative research that may enrich policy development in Europe. We co-produce policy papers and co-organize training sessions and events to exchange on research contributions..
Pacific Northwest Economic Region

The Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) Foundation is a statutory public/private nonprofit created in 1991 by the U.S. states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, and Washington and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan and the territories of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
Borders in Globalization collaborates with PNWER to provide a platform for students to present their work and mobilize their research. We regularly convene our cross-border taskforces for briefings and consultations on current activities.
Radboud University
Radboud University is a public research university located in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
As part of its work with Borders in Globalization, Radboud University is developing three papers on topics related to border studies: one on the concept of the ‘good life’ and changes to European borders; a second on the perception of borders before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, focused on the Dutch–German border region; and a third on synergistic border spaces.

South Asian University
ACADEMIC PARTNER - NEW DELHI, INDIA
South Asian University (SAU) is an international university sponsored by the eight Member States of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
In collaboration with Borders in Globalization, SAU provides student fellowships and hosts international conferences. It is also in the process of finalising a paper for an edited volume.
Transfrontier Euro-Institut Network
POLICY PARTNER - KEHL, GERMANY
The Transfrontier Euro-Institut Network (TEIN) brings together universities, research institutes and training centres that are dedicated to cross-border cooperation in Europe. TEIN’s objective is to build capacity in cross-border contexts to strengthen European integration. To this end, TEIN works to facilitate cross-border cooperation and provide practical solutions to European cross-border issues.
In its work with Borders in Globalization, TEIN examines resurgences and awareness of Indigenous peoples within states and explores how increasingly prevalent politics of nationhood and nationalism affect, fragment, and re-draft intergovernmental relations.
University of Southern Denmark
ACADEMIC PARTNER - ODENSE, DENMARK
The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) has campuses located in Southern Denmark and on Zealand. It offers a number of joint programmes in cooperation with the University of Flensburg and the University of Kiel.
SDU collaborates with Borders in Globalization to examine political infrastructures and regional contexts of border flows, both contemporary and historical, with a special focus on re-bordering of trade regulation in the EU.
World Customs Organization
POLICY PARTNER - BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
The World Customs Organization (WCO) develops international standards, fosters cooperation, and builds capacity to facilitate legitimate trade, to secure a fair revenue collection and to protect society, providing leadership, guidance and support to Customs administrations.
WCO supports Borders in Globalization’s annual summer institutes and research endeavours, connecting the program to its global and globally recognized network of customs officials.
